:: Wooden Ships and Iron Men :
written by Walter on April 13,
2004 |
|

One of my favorite "Age of Sail" games is Avalon
Hill's older design WOODEN SHIPS AND IRON
MEN, which is based on an older set of miniatures
rules by Craig Taylor called BATTLELINE/SHIP OF THE
LINE or some such. I have them somewhere.
If you follow boardgames (like I do), then you know
Avalon Hill has been glommed up by Hasbro. Hasbro has
released SOME older designs, but doesn't appear eager to
gamble on WS&IM. In fact, they have
made the rulebook a free download on their website.
Because of the unlikliehood of a reprint, a gent named
Brian Williams has created PDF copies of the rules, charts,
errata, and counters on his website. Thanks,
Brian! Click on the rulebook to go there.
NOTE: You can also play WSIM via email on e-boardgames |

:: Dwarfstar Games : written by
Walter on April 12, 2004 |
|

Many of you were too young to have been around
when DWARFSTAR GAMES were new, but I have some vague
recollection of them in the hazy fug of my memory of the early
1980s. Dwarfstar games were a series of Microgames,
similar to Metagaming's OGRE, GEV, WARPWAR and etc., that were
published by Heritage miniatures. They came in a
cardboard box (flimsy) and had production values that beat the
pants off of many full-sized products of the same era (1982),
although their game designs were much more complicated and
fiddly than I remember them being.
Now, largely
through the efforts of Joe Scoleri, many Dwarfstar games are
now FREELY DOWNLOADABLE (although NOT in the public
domain). Click on the graphic to see the
site. |

UPDATES: well, Cold Wars 2004, which I am the director of,
will be upon us in less than a month. There's a TON of
work to do, but I'm looking forward to it. 306
events. 85 vendors. In balmy downtown
Lancaster PA. CW 2004 has a lot of my attention right
now, but I'm also working on finishing the LGC game, working
on a circus game, and some guys have been kicking around the
idea of creating a FLASHMAN game as a joint project. I
have to admit the idea has merit.
UPDATE: Cold Wars officially happened. See http://www.hmgs.org
for the recaps. |

:: ERBZINE: written by Walter on Feb

|

Bill Hillman's ERBZINE is a web-only publication
I've known of for years, and have read avidly. ERBZINE is
dedicated to the works of the prolific and talented writer,
Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of John Carter, Warlord of
Mars, and Tarzan, among many others) The amazing thing
about this zine is that Bill publishes something ...
every week. There are THOUSANDS of issues in
archive!!! I've had a hard enough time working on a
publication that is published
quarterly! |

"Dark Circus
things..." written by:
Walt on 9.17.03 |

BIG TOP KARNAGE (or
Mayhem, or
Chaos... it's had a lot of names) is
a project I've been working on for about three years,
conceptually. The game is a conflict between ancient,
ancient circus families that go back to the Dawn of
Civilization, under many names. I can't say specifically
what's happening with this (yet) but check back here
shortly. Lots of fun development going on with people on
three continents!

Man, oh, man.
Remember the senseless waste of time that was Sid
Meier's CIVILIZATION (Microprose, early 90s)? I
do. i nearly broke up with my fiance over it...
(just one more turn, honey!) Well, some
generous souls have gone and created an open license GL
version of civilization (adhering more to the
CIVILIZATION II look and feel than to CIV 1, and with a
lot of extras added). This version of FREECIV is
not at all easy to beat in AI mode, and can be played
over the network (see multiplayer options). I'd
love to give this a try sometime after I'm done running
COLD WARS. Stay tuned. In the meantime, it's
a nice desktop distraction. I heartily recommend
FREECIV!!

CCG
WORKSHOP HAMLET SHEBOYGAN
|
This is a pretty interesting online gaming concept
that just started (though I think CCG workshop might
have been around for a while-- I remember this as being
a standalone PC app sometime back, but I may be
wrong ). In any event, you can play many
off-beat boardgames online here-- and this is primarily
a site for playing CARD games. I caution
you, this is not (primarily) a free site. However,
many games can be played online there for free as a
"sweetener". My PARTICULAR favorites
(hint, hint ) are the HAMLET game and THE
CREATURE THAT ATE SHEBOYGAN (both free).

I've found a great little site recently, called YOU
PLAY IT (in Italy... youplay.it, get it?).
Youplayit has web-ified Blue Max, Cartagena (a Euro) and
King Me (another Euro). Great Fun indeed!
Particularly Blue Max. I'm "Hotspur" there.

If I were king

IF I WERE KING OF THE
WORLD...
I'd make lighter than air
transportation a number one priority. There's
nothing like the great old rigid airships of yore, that
flourished between 1900 and 1935 or so. Here are
two great websites dedicated to my little historical
passion, AIRSHIP (left) and
ZEPPELIN (right). Lots of keen
graphics, music, documents, pictures and etc. related to
lighter than air travel, including links to the new
ZEPPELIN NT (the brand new rigid
airship, reborn!).

it. I'm running a game of MEDIEVAL,
and might run LE GRAND CIRQUE DU
YUCATAN and WEREWOLF
if time allows. Be sure to show up, it's
cheap. At the Tyson's Westpark, Route 7 and
123..
